The Beautiful Island: an Introduction
The Beautiful Island: an Introduction

Nicknamed Formosa, which is Portuguese for Beautiful Island, Taiwan is a vibrant island known for its rich history, democratic resilience, and economic ingenuity. In the 17th century, Taiwan was a focal point for colonial powers and was settled by the Dutch and the Spanish. Later, the Japanese seized the island, bringing both innovation and hardships, particularly during World War II. After Japan's defeat, control of Taiwan shifted to China. Following World War II, Taiwan transitioned from an agrarian economy to an industrial powerhouse, experiencing rapid industrialization and export-led growth in sectors such as textiles, manufacturing, and economics. Today, Taiwan has become a global leader in technology and innovation, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing. Recently, Taiwan's economic strategy has increasingly focused on sustainability, with both the government and private sector actively pursuing sustainable practices in renewable energy, energy-efficient technologies, green manufacturing processes, eco-friendly materials, and waste reduction.
